Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Estimating Siding Procedure The steps that follow describe how to estimate siding.

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Estimating Siding Step 1 For beveled wood siding, figure the square footage of the exterior walls. a.Multiply the perimeter of the house by the wall height. b.Do not subtract for doors and windows. Only subtract areas greater than 50 sq. ft., such as a garage door.

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Estimating Siding Step 1  Example: A house is 32´ wide and 44´ long and has a hip roof. Its perimeter is 152´. The walls are 9´ high.  It has a garage door opening of 112 sq. ft. What is the square footage of the exterior walls?

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Estimating Siding Step 2 Find the nominal size of the beveled siding you are using and the area factor for that size.

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Estimating Siding Step 2 The area factor is based on actual exposures, including an allowance for trim and waste.

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Estimating Siding Step 2 For example, if you use 1x8 siding, the area factor is 1.28.

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Estimating Siding Step 3 Multiply the square footage of the walls by the area factor.

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Estimating Siding Step 4 If the house has a gable roof, figure the gable end separately and add the result to the wall area. a.Multiply the width of the gable end at the base by the distance from the top of the first-floor wall to the peak. b.Divide by 2. Example: A wall is 16´ wide and the height at the peak is 8´. The gable area is:

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Estimating Siding Step 5 Figure the number of squares needed for the job. a.Round up the square footage to the nearest 100 if buying full squares. b.If the manufacturer sells half squares, round up to the nearest 50. c.Any siding left over when the project is completed should be given to the homeowner for future repairs. 1 square = 100 sq. ft.

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Estimating Siding Step 6 a.Figure the area to be covered in vinyl siding as was done for the beveled wood siding. b.Divide the total by 100 to find the number of squares.

Copyright © Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Carpentry & Building Construction Estimating Siding Step 7 a.Multiply the number of squares by 12, which is the number of pieces needed to cover one square. b.For the example used in this presentation, we would need 151 pieces.
