1  STEM Fair, Math Assessment, Scientific Notation Chemistry GT 8/26-27/15

2 Drill  You do not need to write drill this down.  Fill out “STEM Fair” (1/2 sheet) with information about your STEM Fair project.  Please pass your Milk Labs to the front.  HW:  Rules for Exponent Math WS  Get the Parent Letter Confirmation filled out and fill out the Self-Evaluation and Tech Inventory – both are online at msbloedorn.weebly.com (if not done already)

5 STEM Fair  I know you all have been collecting data over the summer… right?  Data should be ready for analysis by the fourth week of school (September 15/16)  If you haven’t gathered data, get to it!  If you have a question about YOUR project, make an appointment to see me before or after school. If you do not have a project (you’ve already spoken with me), I’ll let you know what to do next week.

7 Math Preparedness Assessment  First, this is NOT a test or quiz  I need to know where your math skills are, for you to be successful in Chem GT  These are all skills you should have, coming in to the class.  NO calculators!  Bring it up when you are done

8 Scientific Notation  Turn this into standard notation:  2.3 x 10 4 m  8.04 x 10 -2 s  Turn this into Scientific Notation:  3,400,000 g  0.0032 L

9 Scientific Notation  Shall we review the concept?  Notes!  Converting  Multiplying and dividing without a calculator

12 Scientific Method Qs?  What are the steps to the scientific method?  Any questions about it?

13 Precision vs Accuracy  I will draw a target and discuss the diagram.

14 Precision & Accuracy  What is precision?  Precision is how close a series of measurements are to each other.  What is accuracy?  Accuracy is how close a measurement is to a “standard”. For example, the center of a bullseye.

16 Accuracy and Precision Lab  You will work in the same pairs as Monday.  Now, go into the lab and follow the directions to gather data for Trial 1 of the Accuracy and Precision Lab.  All done? Come back to seats and do the calculations for Trial 1.  Record your percent error on the board.

18 Closure  How accurately can one measure using a ruler? Using a graduated cylinder?  Is there a formal way to represent this concept?
