1 Resolutions Model UN

2 What is a Resolution/What is the point?
In a Model U.N. conference (the actual conference, not including the position papers), focus on two main things: Your speeches and questions/comments Your behavior and resolution writing during caucus

3 What is a Resolution/What is the point?
If your speeches and comments illustrate what your country has done and wants to do, a resolution is a document with actual, specific things your country (you) suggests the member states to do. There are separate resolutions for each topic, so you should be involved in drafting two (or maybe more) at the tournament.

4 What is a Resolution/What is the point?
You will write the majority of the resolution at the tournament itself, during caucuses. Writing resolutions will be a collaborative "international" effort; you should work with other countries (unless your country's politics prohibit it)

5 Parts of a Resolution A resolution consists of two parts:
Preambulatory Clauses: These are used to discuss previous occurrences (such as UN resolution or treaties), any mentions about the topic made, or general information. They begin with specific words (here are a few examples: Accepts, Affirms, Calls upon, Condemns, Declares accordingly They always end with commas

6 An Example of Preambulatory Clauses
The Creation of a Permanent Subcommittee of the General Assembly to Address Criminal Accountability of United Nations Officials and Experts on Missions The General Assembly, Recognizing Resolution A/61/29 of 4 December 2006, which established an Ad Hoc Committee open to all Member States of the United Nations, Acknowledging Resolutions A/62/448, A/63/260, A/64/183, which emphasize the responsibility and actions of each state in response to the criminal offenses committed by officials, Drawing attention to the Group of Legal experts, established by the UN General Assembly and prepared by the Secretariat, which helped to create the governing foundations for the Ad Hoc Committee, Noting the harmful accusations against United Nations peacekeeping missions and other administrative officials,

7 Parts of a Resolution Operative Clauses:
They discuss what the countries are actually proposing should be done. They are policies which the resolution will implement. These are generally more complex/detailed, and end with semicolons. The last operative clause ends with a period.
