What Faculty Members Need to Know

 Created in response to parent/teacher agreement that entering freshman should be technologically literate  Given the task of researching a comprehensive keyboarding curriculum for the K-8 school and implementing this curriculum by the beginning of the second semester

 The required text  Includes instructional objectives, scope and sequence, and information on monitoring and evaluating students  Series of prepared lessons: teaches proper position, home keys, and finger naming  Several review lessons and resources are also included http://www.iste.org/source/orders/isteProductDetail.cfm?product_code=keytea

 Introduce students to parts of a computer http://www.arssupercomputer.org/images/computer-parts.jpg

 Continue to review computer parts  Familiarize students with keyboard  Introduce proper positioning http://abmassage.com/resources/Computer_posture2.jpg http://owen.tofudo.com/collection/misc/computer_posture--mouse_usage.jpg

 Formal keyboarding instruction begins in grade 5  Students will visit the computer lab 3x/wk for 30 minute sessions  Focus on technique and attitude  Computer lab instructor will deliver the lessons with assistance from the classroom teacher  Teachers should strive for at least 1hr/wk of additional keyboarding time integrated throughout their classroom lessons

 Formal keyboarding instruction continues  Students visit the computer lab on A or B days for one semester each school year  Focus on speed and accuracy  Increase integrated keyboarding use in classroom (ex. word processing assignments)

 A new specials schedule has been created to accommodate the new keyboarding lab requirements  Although the lessons will primarily be delivered by the computer lab instructor, classroom teachers are required to stay with their class and assist

With this new keyboarding curriculum, it is the Action Team’s goal, that entering high school students will have the keyboarding skills necessary to use their computer lab time for higher level thinking and integrated curriculum projects, rather than for hunting and pecking.
