MARKETING AND PROMOTION DEAD MAN’S HAND

MARKETING AND PROMOTION OF OUR FILM Due to the fact that our film is low budget and an independent I feel it would be produced by companies such as ‘MIRAMAX’ or ‘Film4’. We would market our trailer through web 2.0 on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. A website would also be created for the film using pull marketing where consumers could interact and gain information e.g. the release date, starring actors etc. We’d take all opportunities to publicise our film as much as possible using push marketing like interviews with the actors and director. These would be presented on the internet or in small company and independent film magazines such as Sight & Sound. The film could also be advertised on gambling websites/games which would relate to the film. We would also use a unique strategy of push marketing by producing and distributing masks that imitate the ones that the main characters wear in the film. These could be given out at suitable places such as near cash points in town where people dressed up as the ‘One-Eyed Royals’ would hand them out along with leaflets and flyers of the film and would answer any questions about the film. It would also be shown at small film festivals and award nights before the main release. Our film would be viewed at independent cinemas like the Duke of York’s Picture house, if it became a larger success from media attention due to the advertisement, I think we would extend the showings to larger more mainstream cinemas to increase the consumer population of our film.

The 4 protagonists are presented on the cover, giving us an introduction to the characters, the props and mise en scene which they are exhibiting. These give us an introduction the narrative and genre of the film, telling us what the plot revolves around. The poster has been presented in an un-neat tatty way, this presents the lifestyles of the characters and the gritty crime that goes on in the film. The squares in which the photos are presented remind me of burn marks or beer mats which gives us an idea of what the characters get up to when they aren’t killing and stealing. The main colour of the poster is red which tells us a lot about the content of the film and gives us an idea of the explicitly and age rating. The tagline of the film is ‘They lost half a million at cards. But they’ve still got a few tricks up their sleeves’. This emphasises the hint of the genre but also has a double meaning, using common poker phrases to give us an idea of the narrative. On the mast line they have stated each of the actors’ names who star as the protagonists, these are all big names which signifies that it is a good film, which is a clever way of promoting the film.

This poster uses the typical way of presenting the main characters, lining them up in order of their importance in the narrative. The poster exhibits a poster modern feature where the main protagonist who is a female, is positioned at the front which tells us she is the most important, this is challenging to most typical posters. Like ‘Lock Stock’, they have placed all the actors/actresses names on the poster which contrasts to most other typical films. At the bottom of the poster, they have wrote a slogan which says ‘This Christmas, Santa’s got a brand new bag’. Here they have combined the narrative of the film with the release date to produce a clever phrase that hints about props in the film, above this slogan is a bag that is loaded full of cash. The props that are shown on the poster (guns and money) all point towards the genre of the film: Crime The reds and yellows create a strong contrast against the black and white poster which brings more attention to the information that they are on e.g. the title and the actors names.

In this poster Tarantino has tried to capture the film as very postmodern by presenting the main character as a strong female role. He has done this by using very strong contrasting colours which really jump out of the poster. These colours match the outfit which the main character is wearing, this gives the poster unity and helps the character fit into the poster better. The strong feel of the poster also matches the posture and expression of the main character. Black and yellow are also colours that often represent danger, this could be tarantino’s way of signifying that there will be a lot of fighting and violence in the film. These colours (black and yellow) were used as the ongoing theme of the film. The dangerous colours and samurai sword prop signify the genre of the film: crime. They have used a very strong impacting font which embeds itself into the consumer’s head. Below this they have mentioned Tarantino’s name, this instantly attracts a lot of consumers because he is renowned for producing good films.
