2 Safe Ground design and deliver high quality, arts-based, group work programmes; holistic interventions demonstrated to impact on men’s capacity to change in a number of ways: 1.Developing empathy - becoming increasingly emotionally engaged with other people and recognising needs 2.Enhancing analysis and decision making - developing and recognising intellectual capacity and critical thinking 3.Strengthening goal setting abilities- enabling planning and preparation for future events and aims, involving others and including others’ in the process 20 years’ experience of working in criminal justice settings

3 Family Man Community Programme 14-session programme Delivered in probation settings Group sessions complimented by wrap-around family support package Family Man 7-week programme Considering impact of imprisonment on the whole family Student and family member develop shared resettlement plan Man Up 6-session programme Delivered in custodial or community settings Explores male identity and challenges social norms that increase risk-taking behaviour Fathers Inside 5-week programme Focus on parenting and child development Coordinates tailored resettlement services based on group’s needs

4 Strong relationships are a pillar of desistance theory The importance of being believed in Critical to building self-confidence and resilience Provide motivation, hope and sense of responsibility Relationship skills are vital to successful resettlement Communication, teamwork, empathy ‘Softer’ skills are more transferrable Families are a resource, NOT always “troubled” The ‘Power of Love’ Want to be appropriately included in sentence and resettlement planning
