3 Aims of Anti-Bullying Week 2014 Stop bullying of disabled children and those with special educational needs All discriminatory language is wrong including disablist language Promote Anti-Bullying initiatives led by young people that include everyone Oxfordshire “Mind Your Language” Campaign

4 Some facts – national surveys Disabled students are twice as likely to be bullied 8 out of 10 students with learning difficulties have been bullied 82% of students who stammer are bullied 90% of students with Aspergers have been bullied in the last year

5 Homophobic Bullying Oxfordshire Survey 2013 Lesbian Gay or Bisexual students almost twice as likely to be bullied 39% of all those surveyed hear people being insulted for being gay ‘most days’ 47% of all those surveyed hear the word ‘gay’ used negatively most days (rises as get older)

6 Homophobic Language Impact on Young People “It’s not what they say to me individually that gets at me, it’s the constant stream of anti-gay remarks that people don’t even know they make. I feel awful all the time. It eats away inside you and sometimes knowing what they’d do to me if they knew makes me lose the ability to breathe” “I hate it when students use homophobic words like ‘gay’ or ‘faggot’, it’s horrible”
