Saturn By: Emma, Christian, and Jesse

Discovery and Name It is almost impossible to know who actually discovered Saturn. From Earth, It just looks like a giant, bright star. Since it appears this way, people have been able to see it for thousands of years. Saturn was named after the Roman god of agriculture. In Greek form, this god is called Kronos.

Measurements Order from the Sun 6 th planet from the Sun Distance from the Sun 890.70 million miles Diameter About 74,898 miles Mass 568,319,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 kg Temperature -288 degrees F Day Length 10.7 Earth hours Year Length 29 Earth Years

Composition and Appearance Saturn’s surface is made out of hydrogen and helium. Saturn’s core is made out of ammonia, methane, and water. Saturn’s atmosphere is made out of hydrogen and helium. Saturn’s rings are made out of rock, water, and ice.

Appearance Saturn looks like a gold brownish color.

Moons Saturn has 62 moons. Some of Saturn’s major moons are Mimosa, Encelabus, and Gigayic. They look like our moon but bigger and some do not have that many craters.

Exploration Cassini,1979, Voyager 1, 1979, Voyager 2, 1981, Huyigens,2005, and Pioneer 11,1979. Discovered erupting geysers and a global subsurface on Enceladus. Revealed Saturn’s rings as active and dynamic. Delivered Huygens probe to Titan for the first landing on another planet’s moon. Revealed Titan as a world with rain, rivers, lakes, and seas.

Unique Facts Saturn is unique in many ways, but I can only say a few. To begin with Saturn has rings. The rings are made of bits of ice and rock. Another way it’s unique is it has many moons. The largest moon is Titan.
