SURGICAL GLOVE TRENDS

AGENDA CHAPTER 1 Powdered Surgical Gloves CHAPTER 4 CHAPTER 2 Powder-Free CHAPTER 3 Latex-Free Safety

Surgical Glove Annual Market Trend

FDA Proposes Ban on Powder

Powdered Glove Timeline > 1971 FDA releases a caution statement regarding powder in surgical gloves: “Caution: After donning, remove powder by wiping gloves thoroughly with a sterile wet sponge, sterile wet towel or other effective method.” > 1997 Publication of FDA Medical Glove Powder Report > 1999 Petition for FDA ban cornstarch powdered gloves by First Citizens > 2008 Second Citizens Petition to ban powdered gloves > 2013 AORN recommends best practice for powder-free gloves is in an intraoperative setting > 2015 FDA proposes ban on powdered gloves

Powder-Free Trend > 8-12% healthcare workers are affected by a latex sensitivity. Powders inside of powdered gloves increases this sensitivity > Powder acts as a vehicle for latex allergens and may precipitate life threatening reactions > Studies show in areas where powdered gloves are used, there is more aerosolized latex than other areas without powder > 80% of surgical gloves sold are powder-free

SHIFT TO MOVING LATEX SAFE AND LATEX-FREE

Latex-Safe > Latex can be found in more than 40,000 commonly used products in healthcare. > Since the elimination of latex could be a massive undertaking for a facility, both logistically and financially, some facilities are beginning that process with a latex-safe environment. > A latex-safe environment is one that minimizes the risk of a reaction occurring in individuals sensitized to natural rubber latex. > Open all cases with a latex-free glove to eliminate costly OR breakdowns. Latex is a common known allergen, but costly to eliminate.

Why Latex-Free?

SAFETY

Double Gloving > AORN recommends heath care practitioners wear two pairs of gloves during invasive procedures* > Over 80% of all surgical glove perforations go unnoticed > A study by the American College of Surgeons showed double gloving reduces the risk of exposure by as much as 87% when the outer glove is punctured > Changing gloves immediately following the breach minimizes the risk of transmission of pathogens between the wearer and the patient *AORN Journal, Februarys 2009, Vol 89, No 2

Radiation Protection > Common protection tools: Lead apron Leaded eyewear Thyroid shield Gonad shield Distance (dose reduction follows inverse-square law) Exposure rings and monitors (record total dose) > Much less common: Radiation Protection Gloves Hands are the closest body part to the x-ray, but the least protected.

Radiation Protection Gloves > Designed to attenuate scattered radiation > Attenuate: reduce in value, but not block > Scattered Radiation: Rays from the direct beam that have been deflected from their original path. Generally happens as they pass through the patient. > The direct beam contains very high energy photons that pass right through radiation gloves. Never put your hands under the direct beam, even while wearing radiation protection gloves.

Biological Effects of Exposure to Radiation > Changes in many cells > Cataracts > Epilation (hair loss) > Erythema (redness) > Necrosis (dead tissue) > Cancer

Biological Effects > Effects are cumulative and related to total equivalent absorbed dose, measured in Sieverts (or millisieverts/mSv) > Clinicians are limited in the annual equivalent dose received; exceeding these amounts can be dangerous > Clinicians using fluoroscopy in the first half of the 20 th century died of cancer at a higher rate than that of other clinicians
