5 Leadership Model A Systems Thinking Approach: ISLLC Standards and improvement strategies are managed through Key Processes Student Achievement Teacher Quality Instructional Leadership ImplementingMonitoring Supporting CommunicatingAdvocatingPlanning

6 ISLLC Standards  A principal may choose to implement specific strategies to meet the ISLLC Standards and/or improve his/her performance relevant to the ISLLC Standards. The standards are: 1.Facilitating the development, articulation, implementation, and stewardship of a vision of learning 2.Advocating, nurturing, and sustaining a school culture and instructional program conducive to student learning and staff professional growth 3.Ensuring management of the organization, operation, and resources for a safe, efficient, and effective learning environment 4.Collaborating with faculty and community members, responding to diverse community interests and needs, and mobilizing community resources 5.Acting with integrity, fairness, and in an ethical manner 6.Understanding, responding to, and influencing the political, social, economic, legal, and cultural context

8 Application Focus (Handout) At the conclusion of this module you will identify key concepts and plan your application focus In the column labeled “Current Reality” –Rate yourself on a scale of 1-5  5 = Highly effective  3 = Satisfactorily Effective  1 = Ineffective –Describe the evidence that supports your application of this concept

9 Implementing Educational Policy  Guiding Question  What policy issues are impacting educational outcomes in your community?  How will you engage and maintain your stakeholders?

10 Consider the following  How have you engaged your stakeholders in your school during the past two years?  What did you wish to accomplish by asking stakeholders to collaborate with your school?  Why is it critical to engage all stakeholders?  Share with a shoulder partner…  At least ONE per question

11 Key Concepts/ Key Ideas Handout: : The Case for Stakeholder Engagement  Individually read the article  Highlight key words (or short phrases)

12 Key Concepts/ Key Ideas  As a table group, in round-robin format…  Share ONE highlighted item & discuss –Make a list of highlighted items –Discuss each item as presented –Continue until all are discussed  Identify & discuss ways that the highlighted ideas might apply to engaging stakeholders in developing a school policy

15 Implementing A Process to Influence Policy Development  Select ONE policy to address and focus on engaging stakeholders to influence a change in that policy. Consider the following…  Items from the article & video  Steps to effectively engage stakeholders in the develop of a new policy?  How would you monitor this process and stakeholder engagement?  What data collection is needed for monitoring and adjusting?  What would be evidence of successful engagement? 15

17 Application Focus  Consider the guiding question, and think about connections between the ISLLC Standard and this workshop’s key concepts  Based on what you’ve discussed and learned today, what can you conclude about engaging stakeholders to influence a change in a policy  Pair/Share ONE strategy that you learned today and how you plan to use it at your school. 17
