1 Literary Allusion To allude (v) = to refer to
a brief and indirect reference to a person, place, thing or idea of historical, cultural, literary or political significance in a text. It does not describe in detail the person or thing to which it refers. It is just a passing comment and the writer expects the reader to possess enough knowledge to spot the allusion and grasp its importance in a text. To allude (v) = to refer to

4 So what? How do the literary allusions to these stories help us better understand what we are reading? These literary allusions help us better understand the character of Scrooge as a boy. In this scene, he appears to be alone, but when young Scrooge was reading, he was not entirely alone for he had an active imagination. He seems to see, physically, the colorful characters he encountered in literature.
