1 A universal language of measurement
The Metric System A universal language of measurement

2 The Metric System Scientists all over the world use the metric system as a standard system of measurement when performing experiments and using the scientific method The metric system has standard units for length, volume, mass and temperature.

3 Length in the Metric System
The unit of length that we use in the metric system is the meter One meter = 39.4 inches, which is just over 3 feet. In the metric system we can change our units to smaller or larger units by multiples of 10.

4 Length in the Metric System
1 meter (m) = 100 centimeter (cm) 1 meter (m) = 1000 millimeters (mm) 1 meter (m) = 1,000,000 micrometers 1000 meters (m) = 1 kilometer (km)

5 Volume in the metric system
Volume is the amount of space an object occupies The standard unit of measurement for volume is the liter for measuring liquid volume The standard unit of measurement for volume is the cubic centimeter for measuring solid volume Just like when we measure length we can also change our unit size by multiples of 10

6 Volume in the metric system
1 liter (L) = 1000 milliliters (mL) 1 liter (L) = 1000 cubic centimeters (cc)

7 Mass and weight in the metric system
Mass is the measure of the mount of matter in an object Weight is the measure of the pull of gravity on that mass In the metric system we use grams as a standard unit of measurement Just like with our other metric units we can also change our unit size by multiples of 10

8 Mass and weight in the metric System
1 kilogram (kg) = 1000 grams (g) 1 gram = 1000 milligrams (mg) 1000 kilograms = 1 metric ton (t)

9 Temperature in the Metric System
The metric system uses Celsius for units of temperature In the Celsius scale water freezes at 0 degrees C and boils at 100 degrees C Normal human body temperature is about 37 degrees C Normal room temperature is about 21 degrees C

10 Lets try! How many centimeters are there in 1 meter?
How many liters are there in 5000 milliliters? How many kilograms are there in 8000 grams? What is the boiling point of water in Celsius?
