A lot of my personal goals for how we do things at Electro Cables have changed. I used to think that customizations to the Axiom code made things better for our users. I still think some things are made better, but some I wonder about. One of our big customizations is for our Work Order Travelers. We’re probably all familiar with the standard Axiom traveler report.

It’s functional, but as modern reports go it’s quite bad. It’s hard to read. It’s pretty ugly. Any additional information to be added has to be crammed into the center notes section. * * Confidential Information of Aptean, Inc.

We prettied ours up and added a lot of user data to it. It works very well. But it always bothered me how we have to print it out and send it to each operation. After printing it goes through a long checking process, often sitting on desks for several days.

It bothered me so much that I built another customization to make it available to the shop floor without printing. I do that sometimes. build something because I think it is a good idea, without much consultation. Sometimes it works out great. Sometimes people need to see something before they can talk about it.

It worked great but people still felt kind of uncomfortable with it. Even though the program screens could be updated much faster than the paper with the most accurate data, people still trusted the printed words more than the screens on their computer. Maybe there should have been more user input to the building process.

Maybe it will take more time for people to get more comfortable. Maybe it doesn’t look enough like the paper reports. Maybe it needs to provide more than just an updatable version of the paper reports. Every day we still print dozens and dozens of multi-page paper reports

Maybe it actually has something to do with name (traveler). Could the process of the paper traveling from desk to desk and then from machine to machine impart it with a kind of authenticity that the digital report cannot reproduce? No manager’s hands have touched the digital screen. Who has responsibility for it? Who takes ownership of it?

Some departments have reduced the amount of paper they use, but most have not.
