4  Some think this is a time of “storm and stress”  Some don’t think adolescence is that bad (89% of kids say its not that bad).  However, there are developmental tasks that must be mastered, which can be stressful.

5  9 challenges 1. Accepting your makeup and being masculine or feminine. 2. Developing appropriate relations with peers. 3. Becoming emotionally independent of parents/adults 4. Achieving assurance that you will become economically independent.

6 5. Deciding/preparing for a vocation. 6. 6. Developing cognitive skills and concepts necessary for social competence. 7. Understanding/achieving socially responsible behavior. 8. Preparing for marriage/family 9. Acquiring values

7  Girls – start 8-10  Boys – 9-16  All other information about puberty you should already know, if not read page 95- 97 (i.e. spermarche, menarche, etc.).

8  The average age of marriage – 26  Middle/upper class females who attend college are more sexually active that similar females 30-40 years ago.  870,000 teenage pregnancies per year.  3 million cases of STDs.  Abstinence is the only method that guarantees no babies and no STDs.

10  Age 10-11 adolescence understand hypothetical situations.  Dr. Elkind says this leads to trouble, including:  Finding fault with authority figures, argumentativeness, indecisiveness, apparent hypocrisy, self-consciousness, invulnerability.

11  “who am I?”  Completely normal “crisis”  Part of growing up and realizing you have to make decisions/choices that will affect your future.  The future is no longer a hypothetical situation.

13  You can’t just learn about a teenage based on them.  You have to understand that relationships and other people contribute to how they think/feel.
