3 India- Location India is located in Southern Asia. The Indus River flows through the northern portion of the country. The Ganges run through central India The Himalayan Mountains are located to the North

4 India: Landforms Himalayas and Hindu Kush –Have provided protection from invaders Gangetic Plain –Fertile Land –Located in-between Indus and Ganges –Most populated Deccan Plateau

5 India: History 1660- Britain became trading partners with India via the East India Trading Company By 1760 British had gained political and economic power over India –India was a colony of Great Britain –Indian citizens disliked being ruled by a foreign country. –Wanted to become an independent nation

6 India: Nationalism Define Nationalism –The love and pride in ones own nation and/ or country Began to rise in the 1800s –Disliked the way they were being treated (2 nd class) –Businesses that competed with British businesses were closed. –Forced to buy British Goods

7 India: Nationalism Indian National Congress –1885; created to negotiate for independence Muslim League –1906; created to negotiate for independence Their ideas of independence were based on the British democratic system

8 Indian: Nationalism WWI –Most Indians fought for the British; thought independence would be their reward. They were not given independence after WWI –Protests began –British put down the protest by open fire in 1919 in Amritsar

11 Interesting Facts about Gandhi He was born on October 2, 1869 in Porbandar, India He was married when he was 13 years old to Kasturbai Makanji. He had four children. He spent most of his time fighting for the independence of India. He led the Salt March to protest against the British. He went to Law School in London. He had a Law Office in South Africa. Gandhi was killed on January 30, 1948. He influenced Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela and millions of other people.
