SESSION OBJECTIVE By the end of the session participants should be able to identify steps taken when organizing a field day.

DEFINITION OF A FIELD DAY One of the participatory extension methods used to share: information. good agricultural practices. knowledge. skills. experiences. NB. Various tools can be used during the field day to reinforce understanding of various messages e.g. songs, drama, role plays e.t.c.

STEPS TAKEN WHEN ORGANISING A FIELD DAY 1.Awareness. 2.Preparations for the Field day. 3.Holding the Field day. 4.Field day Evaluation. 5.Report writing.

1. AWARENESS Hold a meeting to sell the idea, if routine, then to remind farmers. This to be done well before the start of the season. Agree on: a.the objective. b.nature of the field day [competition or demo] c.Possible dates/month. Involve all stakeholders from the word go.

2.PREPARATIONS Committee selection Role definition. Judging of the fields if not demo. Decide on who to invite. Drafting of the program[Group Work if time permits] Confirmation of date, venue and guest speaker. Publicity of the field day. Master of ceremony selection and grooming. Rehearsals or role play prior to the event.

3.HOLDING THE FIELD DAY A day before the day, all should be in place including role definition [who does what]. Be on the venue very early. Why? Programs issued as people arrive. Observe local customs when starting the day. Follow the program. Give ample time to the Host farmer to explain whilst still at the field. Extension Agent to assist on technical issues raised.

5. REPORT WRITING What information to include in the report? Is it important to produce a report?

OPEN DISCUSSION 1.Who should sit on the high table? 2. Who should lead the field tour? 3. What is the role of local leadership during the field day? 4. How long should a field day last? 5. Is food a priority when organizing field days? 6. Are field days effective in relaying extension messages? 7. How do you treat those people who are not on the program? 8. What are the challenges in organizing field days?
