1 How to use triple-beam balance to measure mass.
Objective: To accurately measure the mass of objects. Need a triple beam balance for every student (only have 21).

Use a balance to measure mass. There are three types. Triple-beam balance, Double-pan balance, and digital/electronic balance.

3 Watch the video modeling how to use the triple-beam balance.

4 Practice time: Let’s label the diagram Be ready to touch the balance part when named.
Have students retrieve a balance from the cabinet and put on their desks. T calls out a balance part and asks Ss to touch it. T talks Ss through the steps; walking around to check progress.

Steps to follow: 1. If needed, zero the pointer using the adjustment knob. 2. Place object on pan. 3. Move the 100g rider, clicking into each notch, until pointer drops below Back 100g rider up one notch. 5. Continue with the 10g rider. Same as above. 6. Repeat with the 1g rider until pointer is at Add up the three readings for total mass in g. Read through steps together. Teacher then demonstrates following each steps in front of class.

Closure: 1. What was the learning objective? 2. Which step is the hardest for you to remember? 3. What are the steps I use to measure mass?

9 On your own: Find 2 objects in your backpack of different apparent weights. Find the mass of each of the objects. Have your neighbor check your work.
