1 “Tantramar Revisited” – Charles G. D. Roberts 1.The speaker has returned; suggests a kind of longing. 2.Purpose of lines 1 – 7: mark the passage of time. Much has happened since he/she was here last, not all positive. 3.“I” is a man or woman who is sitting or standing at enough distant to take in a vast landscape (panorama) (line 11). Use of “I” reflects influence of the Romantic movement (introspective, nostalgic).

2 4.We are led down through the landscape, moving in a panoramic view of what the speaker can see (ll.10-24); then moves farther out beyond sight (ll.25-36) to areas the speaker sees only in his/her mind but knows well, both far-off, then closer, then far-out again. This creates a rhythm like the tide itself. Second to last stanza (penultimate stanza) provides a kind of frame for the poem. The last stanza moves outside the picture to the poet himself and his meditation.

3 5.time of year – autumn (ll.33-34, 37-40) “Now at this season the nets are unwound; they hang from the rafters...” “Now at this season the reels are empty and idle…” 6.Paraphrase of the last 4 lines: “I remember when being here created joy and passion within me, The landscape filled me with its sweet taste and smell, But I will not go down to the marshland, Rather remain here, preferring to remember rather than see, Just in case a too close inspection destroys the old illusion and shows me that things have changed here as well”

4 7.References to colour: “green hills” (l.8), “green-rampired Cumberland Point (l.22), “miles on miles of green” (l.24); “tawny bay” (l.25); “white sail” (l. 27); “slim, grey masts” (l.28), “grey hawk” (l.47); “wide red flats” (l.29); “lonesome golden afternoon: (l.40) 8.Long lines create a smooth, flowing, lingering effect, rhythmic like the ebb and flow of the tide; this suits the nostalgic theme. 9.personification – “gossiping grass” (l. 38) – creates a whispering effect of the grasses being blown by the wind. onomatopoeia – “groaned each reel” (l. 52); “hush” (l. 50)
