The Respiratory System

KEY CONCEPT The respiratory system exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide.

 Respiration is the exchange of gases  This includes: -The intake of oxygen gas -Release of carbon dioxide gas - Exchanges take place between the lungs and the environment

 Function: - Bring the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the blood, air and tissues

 Pharynx - The passage way for both food and air - Located at back of mouth  Trachea - Windpipe - Air moves from pharynx to trachea

 Look at the image below. Based on what you have learned so far about the human body.... What is the worst that could happen?

 Larynx - Vocal cord - Located at the top of the trachea - Air moving between the larynx and trachea cause tissues to vibrate creating sound

 Smoking is the leading cause of lung diseases.

 Bronchi - Large air passage way leading into the lungs  Alveoli - Tiny air sacs - Where blood and air meet

 Oxygen and carbon dioxide are carried by the blood to and from the alveoli.  oxygen diffuses from alveoli into capillary  oxygen binds to red blood cells  carbon dioxide diffuses from capillary into alveoli ALVEOLI GAS EXCHANGES capillaries alveolus capillary co 2 o2o2 Co 2 diffuses into alveolus. O 2 diffuses into blood.

Breathing - The movement of air into and out of the lungs - No muscle are connected to the lungs Diaphragm: - Muscle located at the bottom of the chest cavity - Responsible for the breathing motion
