1 Test set up Heat source: The radiant heat source used is shown in Fig 1. Temperature of source temp was set to 650 Materials tested: 6”x 6” samples of the following materials were tested (Fig. 3): –.063” Al. (Same material used on some exhaust heat shields) – MTI (SS & Al foil w/ airgap) – Tighitco (SS & Al foil w/fiberglass) Fig 2 – Thermocouples on face of heat source: Fig 1 – Heat source and temperature controller: Fig 3 – Heat shields tested (L to R:.063” AL, TigHitco, MTI:

2 Test 1 methodology Test was designed to test the relative performance of the heat shields. For this test, a heat shield was mounted to the front of a wooden box lined with aluminum tape(Fig. 4). A thin flat black piece of aluminum was mounted in the center of the box and 1” from the back of the heat shield (Fig. 5). The temperature was read from a thermocouple attached to the front of the black aluminum plate. The black plate represents in ideal black body which theoretically absorbs all radiant energy passing through and emitted by shield. For a secondary measurement, a temperature probe was inserted halfway between the back of the shield and black plate. The test box was placed 1” from heat source with the shield facing the heat source. A fixture was used to insure the test box was placed the same distance from the heat source for each test. The test was run with the three different heat shields described in the test setup. The duration of each test was 60 minutes. Probe and plate temperatures were recorded for each test. 650 F HEAT SOURCE HEAT SHIELD BLACK ALUMINUM PLATE 1” Fig. 4 - picture of wood test box: Fig. 5 - Diagram of setup for test 1: Thermocouple

3 118 F 144 F 153 F Test 1 Results Results: Only temperature data recorded from the black plate is shown in the below graph. Air temp taken with the probe showed similar correlation, but is considered less reliable as movement of probe allowed for variation in probe location between tests.

4 Test 1 conclusion Conclusion: The results of this test show no performance advantage with the MTI or TIGHitco shields. The.063” Aluminum shield preformed the best of the three samples tested. After 1 hour of testing the surface temperature of the black plate was 118 F using the aluminum shield. The surface temperature using the TIGhitco and MTI shields were 144 F and 153 F respectively after an hour of testing.
