SCIENCE, GEOGRAPHY AND ICT Unit Overview Healthy Eating – Are We What We Eat?

Healthy Eating Do you know your carbohydrates from your proteins? Your healthy food from unhealthy food? This unit is going to build on work which you will cover in your Science and Geography lessons – and it will use ICT to help you to learn about the nutritional content of food, so that you can become more healthy!

Unit Objectives By the end of this unit, you should be able to… Create and use a database effectively Create and use a spreadsheet effectively Present summary information effectively Understand nutrition and to be able to judge the nutritional content of different foods Understand the effect of food miles when choosing meals Work out the nutritional content of meals and decide which are healthy options

How your ICT work will be marked… Level 4 - With help, you are able to use software to store data and to make calculations. You can search data to find useful information. You can understand why this work links to Science and Geography. Level 5 - You create systems using the computer, which store data and calculates the nutritional content of meals. You can describe how and why your works links to your Science and Geography lessons. Level 6 - You create systems and can use them to help you to plan for a healthy menu. You use your Science and Geography work to help you when building the systems and when deciding upon a healthy menu. Level 7 – You are able to test your systems to prove that they work effectively and accurately. You create a user manual so that others can use your systems. You can present your work and evaluate it to say how you could improve it further. You can write sensibly about the use of ICT, Science and Geography in this unit and what effect this work could have upon society as a whole.

Your Task Just imagine… …you are in charge of the school canteen… …you are about to open a new restaurant… …or you just want to become a more healthy person! You might have a good idea of what is healthy and unhealthy, but how could you create a system which will help you to work out exactly how healthy a particular meal is…? To begin, in pairs, write a list of the different ways in which food content can be measured – to help you, think of your science work on nutrition!

Creating Your Database Once you have completed your data capture form, you can begin to design your database which will store the data. Use the categories of data from your data capture form – these will become the fieldnames in your database Once you have set up the fieldnames and decided upon the format of the data type, you can then store data about food and drink in your database!

Creating Your Database – Data Types To help you to set up your database, there is an interactive quiz to teach you about data types.

Inputting Your Data There are two different ways to enter data into a database in Microsoft Access… The table (above) and the form (left) are linked together and you can use either to enter the data. Which one is better, and why?
