Science December 15 2015

Warm Up Bring your notebook, pencil, and agenda to your desk Grab a warm up from the front table Complete Tuesday’s warm up now YOU ARE QUIET, WORKING WHEN THE BELL RINGS

Announcement… Test Wed Dec 16th On Thermal Insulators Thermal Conductors Electrical Insulators Electrical Conductors

Today’s Agenda Demonstration using a Conductivity Meter Investigation of Electrical Circuits – Discussion of lights in our classroom – Exploration on chromebooks of circuits – Completion of Monday’s worksheet then review – Extra credit: Bill Nye Video on Electricity with questions

Worksheet today…. You will complete a variety of activities today related to a conductivity meter and electrical circuits This worksheet will be collected at the end of class today You are responsible for completing Monday’s worksheet as well Extra Credit: Bill Nye Video with questions

Today’s Demonstration… We are going to test a variety of objects using a conductivity meter today. Please follow along on your worksheet

What is in a Conductivity Meter? An energy source: Battery An indicator: The red light A conductive material: 2 metal prongs

Let’s test items in our classroom to see if they are electrical conductors or insulators Please follow along on your worksheet now Object Hypothesis (Conductor/Insulator Result (Conductor/Insulator )

The objects we will test… IN THE OBJECTS COLUMN: METAL FORK PLASTIC FORK CAP ERASER TEXTBOOK LEGS ON A STUDENT CHAIR THE SEAT OF A STUDENT CHAIR SALT WATER PAPER CLIP EXPO MARKER TRAY ON MY WHITEBOARD

Let’s Experiment! I will pull a number from my basket If I call your seat number, you will come up and test the object from our list If we see a red light = it’s a conductor If we do not see a red light = it’s an insulator

Let’s think about this… When I plug in the lamp, the light turns on…. 1. How does this happen? 2. What materials are used in the lamp’s cord? 3. How do you know?

Any Volunteers? An electrical current runs through the cord The wires inside are metal (an electrical conductor) These wires are covered with a plastic coating (an electrical insulator) This allows us to touch the cord while the lamp is on!

For the remainder of class… You will receive your chromebook to complete the remaining sections of your worksheet Remember this will be collected at the end of class You will access the powerpoint from the teacher wiki page Remember to view each slide in the present mode so you can access the video/exploration activities

Any remaining time… Make sure you have all activities complete: 1. Monday’s worksheet on real world examples and poster showing electrical conductors and insulators and thermal conductors and insulators 2. If your worksheet is complete, then you may raise your hand for the extra credit Bill Nye Video (link is on next slide)

Exit Ticket How would get this bell to ring with these few materials? 2 wires 9 volt battery bell
