SWBAT… to simplify expressions by combining like terms Agenda 1. Notes on simplifying expressions (40 min) 2. Exit slip – (this will be collected at the end of period) (10 min) Warm-Up: 1. Set up Cornell notes. Topic = Algebraic Expressions: Combining Like Terms HW#1 – Algebraic Expressions (Q1-15) Vocabulary note cards (due Thursday) Tuesday, 11/3/09

Algebraic Expressions: Combining Like Terms Objective: To simplify expressions by combining like terms Infinity HS Ms. Sophia Papaefthimiou

Reminders If you got a 77% or less on the midterm, I will see you today after school to work on corrections This week’s vocabulary note cards are due Thursday

A term is a 1) number, 2) variable, or 3) a product / quotient of numbers and variables. Example 5 m 2x 2 2x 2 + x + 3

The coefficient is the numerical part of the term. Examples 1) 4a4 2) y 2 1 3)

The constant term a term that contains only a number. In other words, there is no variable in a constant term. Example: 2x 2 + x + 3 3 is the constant term

The variable term is a term that contains only variables or numbers with variables. Example: 2x 2 + x + 3 2x 2 and x are the variable terms

Like Terms are terms with the same variable AND the same exponent. ***the order of the variables does not matter ***the exponent has to be on the same variable To simplify expressions with like terms, simply combine the like terms.

Are these like terms? 1) 13k, 22k Yes, the variables and exponents are the same. 2) 5ab, 4ba Yes, the order of the variables doesn’t matter. 3) x 3 y, xy 3 No, the exponents are on different variables.

Which of the following is the simplified form of -4x + 7x ? 1. -4 2. 3x 3. -3x 4. 4 Answer Now

The above expression simplifies to: 5a and a are like terms and are like terms

1) 6.1y – 3.2y 2.9y 2) 4x 2 y + x 2 y 5x 2 y 3) 3m 2 n + 10mn 2 + 7m 2 n – 4mn 2 10m 2 n + 6mn 2 Simplify

21a – 6b 5) 4d + 6a 2 – d + 12a 2 18a 2 + 3d 6) y 4) 13a + 8a – 6b

Exit Slip (to be collected) Simplify: 1.) 4x + x – 2x 2.) 3w + 2 – w 3.) 3k – 5 – 7k + 9 4.) 5x 2 – 4x 5.) 5n – 4 – 7n + 14
