AGENDA – 10/5/15 Take out notebooks! DO NOT GLUE ANYTHING IN YET! Set-up New Unit and TOC pages in notebook Warm-up: Plasma Membrane Plasma Membrane Notes

Cover Page On the next page make a cover page for the next unit ONLY (we will make a TOC for each unit as we go through the year.) Unit 2: Cellular Processes, DNA Structure and Cell Division

Unit 2 Table of Contents On the back page make a table of contents for the next unit ONLY (we will make a TOC for each unit as we go through the year.) Set up this one page like this below….

2.Once you have your pages set up, write in your first two entries: 10/5 10/5 – 11/13 Bell-Ringers Unit 2.1 SPMS 1-4 5

Progress Monitoring Sheet DO NOT FILL THIS OUT YET!!!! (if you want to lightly pencil through it so you can see what you are familiar with now, you can…..BUT, we will fill this out together about a week before the test so you can see what you need to work on/get help with before the test) These things should be in your table of contents and secured in your book 1.Bell-Ringers 2.Progress Monitoring Sheet for Unit 2.1

1. On pages 1-4, divide the page into five sections to put your bell-ringers in this week (like below). 2. In the first box, Put the date and answer the bell question inside that box…We will use these entries for the next six weeks. Bellringers 1 Date Just like this!

Bell-ringer: 10/5/15 1.Name three things you know about the plasma membrane.

2.1 Section Objectives – page 35 Identify the structure and function of the cell’s plasma membrane Today’s Objective:

Summary Section 2 – pages 175-178 The plasma membrane is a boundary around ALL cells that helps maintain homeostasis. PLASMA MEMBRANE Plasma Membrane

Summary Section 2 – pages 175-178 It is the plasma membrane’s job to maintain HOMEOSTASIS by: allowing waste products to leave the cell. keeping water and nutrient levels at a balance- if (there are too many, it will let some out). allowing nutrients and water into the cell.

Summary Section 2 – pages 175-178 PLASMA MEMBRANE Selective Permeability : allows some molecules into the cell while keeping others out. (picky about what goes in and out)

Summary Section 2 – pages 175-178 PLASMA MEMBRANE Glycerol Molecule Two Fatty Acid Chains Phosphate Group Most of the plasma membrane is made of phospholipids. Side Question: Since these are lipids, discuss with your group- What organelle in the eukaryotic cell makes phospholipids?

Summary Section 2 – pages 175-178 This means two layers (or a sandwich) of phospholipids. WHAT IS IT MADE OF? OUTSIDE CELL INSIDE CELL PLASMA MEMBRANE The plasma membrane is referred to as a phospholipid bi-layer

Summary Section 2 – pages 175-178 The head of the phospholipid molecule is attracted to water, whereas, the two fatty acid tails are repelled by water. PLASMA MEMBRANE POLAR, attracted to water NON-POLAR, repelled by water hydrophilic hydrophobic

Summary Section 2 – pages 175-178 There are watery environments inside and outside the cell. Therefore the phospholipid layers look like a sandwich, with the head ends facing the watery environments they are attracted to, and the tail ends being the inside of the sandwich, away from the water. PLASMA MEMBRANE

Summary Section 2 – pages 175-178 The cholesterol prevents the fatty acid chains of the phospholipids from sticking together. Cholesterol Molecule PLASMA MEMBRANE

Summary Section 2 – pages 175-178 PLASMA MEMBRANE Transport Protein Proteins also span the entire plasma membrane. Transport Proteins help the membrane be selectively permeable. They move ‘selected’ substances through.

Summary Section 2 – pages 175-178 PLASMA MEMBRANE Plasma membrane Transport protein

Summary Section 2 – pages 175-178 The fluid mosaic model describes the plasma membrane as a flexible boundary of a cell. The phospholipids move within the membrane. PLASMA MEMBRANE

Summary Section 2 – pages 175-178 “Fluid” because it moves like currents in a lake. PLASMA MEMBRANE “mosaic” because the proteins that are found throughout the membrane create a mosaic-type pattern on the surface.
