oneone WE-2B Objective: To complete a series of activities and explorations in order to determine why substances or objects sink or float. CSI Note: Why do substances sink and float? ? Drill: 1. Today we will work in groups of 1-4 students. Sit close to your group members. (not in the back) 2. Get a Lesson Sheet from the SET. 3. Complete the Drill portion only.

oneone WE-2B What do you need for today? 1.Your Log Book 2.1 computer per group (log in) 3.Pen or pencil 4.1 functioning brain 5.Dry erase marker (later)

oneone WE-2B Activity 1: Demonstration – Ghostly Candle 1.Observe the teacher demonstration. 2.Record your thoughts and ideas in your Log Book. Can you explain what happened?

oneone WE-2B Activity 2: Station Activities (You may work in groups of 1 – 4 members.) 1.Choose any station to work at. Each station contains 1 activity. 2.Read the instructions at the station. 3.Complete the activity and record any observations, thoughts, or ideas in your Log Book. 4.Continue to additional stations until time runs out. Stations do not need to be completed in a specific order.

oneone WE-2B Activity 3: Open Discussion – What Did You Learn? 1.Why do you think substances sink or float? 2.Provide support from the stations or personal experience.

oneone WE-2B Activity 4: Summing It Up! A substance will float if it is less dense than the substance it is in. A substance will sink if it is more dense than the substance it is in. There are physical restrictions.

oneone WE-2B Activity 5: Let’s Revisit 1.Ghostly Candle 2.Density Tube

oneone WE-2B Activity 6: Try This Scenario: You have 3 liquids that do not mix with each other. Their densities are as follows: Anto: 4.65 g/mL Wils: 8.2 g/mL Duda: 1.8 g/mL How will the 3 liquids layer if they are placed in the same container? Draw a picture on your dry erase board. What would happen if an object with a density of 4 g/cm 3 were dropped into the container? Why?

oneone WE-2B BONUS FACT: Pure water has a density of 1 g/cm 3. EXIT EVAL

oneone WE-2B HOMEWORK: 1. Weather Research 2. Magnetism Quiz Friday 3. Catapult Update Paragraph
