10 Consider This… Why is the sky blue? Why are some sunsets so colourful? Why can some animals see in the dark? Why does the ocean look blue, or in some cases green?

11 It’s all about Light Energy!

12 What is Light? Light is a form of radiant energy that you detect with your eyes. Light energy comes from chemical energy, electrical energy and nuclear energy.

13 Light energy travels extremely fast… it is estimated to travel at a speed of approximately 300 000 km/s.

15 How Does Light Help us See Objects? The light energy from a source (sun, light bulb) spreads throughout a room. Some of the light bounces off of objects, travelling to your eyes allowing you to see the objects in the room. The rest of the light is absorbed by objects and transformed into thermal energy.

16 The History of Light Pythagoras (born between 580 and 572 BC, died between 500 and 490 BC) A Greek mathematician and philosopher.

17 He believed that beams of light were made up of tiny particles. When these beams of light came from objects and reached the eye, they carried information about the object to the eye.

18 Albert Michelson (1852-1931) An American physicist known for his work on the measurement of the speed of light. In 1907 he received the Nobel Prize in Physics, the first American to receive the Nobel Prize in sciences.

19 Early Technologies One of the earliest technologies involved using light to improve vision. This was a curved piece of glass which enlarged print. Today we call this a magnifying glass

21 Anton van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723) He is commonly called the “Father of Microbiology” He was the first person to observe and describe single celled organisms.

23 Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) He made his own lenses which he used to build a telescope to magnify objects in space. He discovered four of Jupiter’s moons. Galileo’s early telescope
