2 Dissident Day What: A dissident is someone whom speaks out against his or her government and or policy. A dissident is someone willing to speak out in an effort to bring about change (revolution). How: Effective dissidents use the media to get their message out to the world. Social media is a very effective tool today = cyber dissidents Dissidents are willing to sacrifice their own lives for the cause (Martyr)

3 Mohandas K. Gandhi Educated Indian who pushed for independence from the British. Gandhi pushed for nonviolent passive resistance and civil disobedience The Salt March and boycott of British goods helped bring change nonviolently

He was imprisoned for 27 years as an attempt to hinder (slow down) his efforts. He became the 1 st democratically elected Black South African President and apartheid is officially over. He received the Nobel Peace Prize and recently passed away

She was shot in the face/head by the Taliban to send a fearful message to all those that were supporting her and her efforts. She has returned to her cause and has brought world attention to the issues in Pakistan. She was under house arrest for many years in an attempt to keep her quiet. She is trying to run for the Presidential Office in 2015 She received the Nobel Peace Prize

Tibet was the home of many Chinese Buddhists. The Dalai Lama fled from Tibet or risk being killed by the Red Guards. He lives in exile in India, just across the border and speaks out against China and China’s policy. He demands the recognition of Tibet as a separate part of China. He received the Nobel Peace Prize

He is an activist against the Chinese government and its censorship of the media in China. He has been beaten and arrested by the Chinese government. He is under constant surveillance by the government.
