Copyright Law

Little-known Facts Copyright owners sue to make a statement - teachers, librarians, principals, superintendent, board Work done within the scope of employment belongs to the employer, even if done after hours or during vacation

Plagiarism Plagiarism = act of presenting the words, ideas, images, sounds, or any creative expression of others as your own. Studies of cheating: 72% - 75% of high school students admit to it GHHS students say: 95% - 100%

Types of Plagiarism Downloading free research paper Buying from commercial paper mill Copying/pasting web/ database Copying from previous student Not using quotation marks Changing key words= Thesaurusitis Faking citations

How Can I Prevent Plagiarism? Problem: Students want to economize, do things fast Solution: Assign in advance & have checkpoints

Why Do Students Cheat? Problem: They procrastinate, esp. on assignments that don’t interest them Solution: Customize topic to include something of personal interest

Why Do Students Cheat? Problem: Students think their writing/work not good enough Solution: Encourage them to use their own “voice”; do a sentence outline first

Why Do Students Cheat? Problem: The assignment is not relevant: Write a short report about Alexander Graham Bell. Solution: Change the assignment/ question: You are AGB; write about the most significant day in your life.

Preventing Plagiarism: Prevention Is Better than Detection Teach how to paraphrase, summarize, & quote Use Turnitin & explain consequences Always require attribution

Require specific types of sources = 2 print, 2 databases Have checkpoints if longer assignment Keep student writing samples Have students present & defend research orally

Changing the Assignments Use real-life problem solving and decision making Relate info to students’ lives Higher student engagement & creativity = lower plagiarism risk Higher student engagement= higher critical thinking skills used

Changing the Questions The “topic” report – on a person, country, event, etc. – has been done by Wikipedia Research projects (even small) = training grounds for adult problem-solving and decision- making

Turn a “Topic” Into an Inquiry-Driven Assignment ASK: Which? Which One? How? What if? Should? Why?

Relevant, Meaningful, Interesting, & Personalized Assignments Ask Students to: Debate Conclude Recommend Justify Argue Propose Invent Analyze Judge Support/ reject/ critique Prioritize Evaluate Plan
