1 Good readers use many strategies to read a word they don’t know. These friends can help you out.

2 Eagle Eye Look at the pictures! Look at the pictures for clues to help you figure out the word.

3 Tryin’ Lion Try it again! Try to reread the sentence. Try a word that makes sense.

4 Skippy Frog Skip it, skip it! Skip the word. Read to the end of the sentence. “Hop back” and read it again.

5 Lips the Fish Get your lips ready! Say the first few sounds of the word out loud. Read to the end of the sentence and say the sounds again.

6 Stretchy Snake “S-t-r-e-t-c-h” it out! Stretch the word out slowly. Put the sounds together to figure out the word.

7 Chunky Monkey Chunk the word! Look for a “chunk” of the word you know (-ing, -and, -at, -op, ect.). Look for a word part (be-, -er, ect.).

8 Helpful Kangaroo Ask for help! After you have tried all the other strategies, ask for help.

9 Flips the Dolphin Flip the vowels! Try flipping the vowels. Try another vowel sound. Should it be a long or short vowel sound?
