Thermal / Heat Energy Conduction, Convection, and Radiation
2
What is Thermal / Heat Energy?
3
Write yes or no on your white boards Do really cold things like ice have thermal/ heat energy?
4
Bill Nye Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1eAOygDP 5s
5
Write in Your Foldable More Molecules = More Thermal/ Heat Energy Which one has more Thermal/ Heat energy? OR
6
WHY?
7
Heat can be transferred by 3 different ways. What are they? Conduction Convection Radiation
8
Conduction Learning Goal
9
Add This to Your Foldable Conduction is the transfer of heat energy when molecules touch other molecules Molecules are always moving Heat causes them to move faster When a heated molecule bumps into a non-heated molecule, the non- heated molecule becomes heated.
10
Add This to Your Foldable The heat was transferred from the heated molecule to the non- heated molecule Heat flows from warmer to cooler Thus, the non-heated molecule moves faster and becomes heated
11

Activity 6 Turn to page 14 in your student journals
13
Alternative Activity 6
14
Write your response on the white boards Does conduction only occur with solids?
15
Ice Water Experiment
16
Conduction is the transfer of heat energy through molecules Conduction can occur in solid, liquids, or gases
17
What is the heat GOING into? Placing a skillet on a hot stove Licking ice cream Dropping a marshmallow into hot chocolate An ice cube in a glass of water Steam from corn on the cob Pouring milk into coffee

How you do feel about conduction? 4- I can teach conduction to 8 th graders 3- I understand conduction and could get an A on the next quiz 2- I understand conduction but I need more examples 1- I’m starting to understanding conduction 0- I don’t understand conduction at all
20
Convection Learning Goal
21
Add This to Your Foldable Convection is the transfer of heat energy through liquids and gases It occurs in a circular motion When heat is added to fluids, it become less dense (less heavy) This causes it to rise As the fluids travel away from the heat source, it starts to cool down
22
Add This to Your Foldable It becomes more dense (more heavy) The dense fluids begins to sink lower When it gets closer to the heat source, the fluids start to heat up When heat is added to fluids, the molecules become less dense (less heavy) The cycle starts again
23

Convection Experiment

Alternative Convection Experiment http://www.teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=160 336&title=Convection
26
The center of the Earth is very hot. Explain the convection currents in this picture
27
Story Time With Ms. Weston
31
Was Goldilocks telling the truth?
32
Turn to page 18 in your Student Journals
33
Goldilocks Experiment What is the variable that changes? Should we use the same amount of oatmeal? What should we measure the Temperature in? Starting Temp ( C)Final Temp. (C ) Large Bowl Medium Bowl Small Bowl
34
Was Goldilocks telling the Truth? Why was the large bowl too cold and the small bowl too hot? (think about conduction and convection)
35
