1 GT/AP Monday 9.21.15  Journal #10 The Puritans  Make a list of everything you know about the Puritans (aka the Pilgrims)  Read the article “The Puritans Weren’t so Puritanical”  Make a list new facts you learned  William Bradford’s “Of Plymouth Plantation”  Pg. 102  Begin Rhetorical Analysis  HW: Opportunity for Revisions— due tomorrow

2 Tuesday 9.22.15  Due: Revisions  Be sure you highlight the sentence you change in your essay  Staple the revisions on top  Turn in to tray  If you did not do revisions, turn your original essay into the tray  “Of Plymouth Plantation” Rhetorical Analysis Essay—how to get there— due Thursday  Summer Reading Exams will be returned tomorrow—today is your last chance to make it up.  RTI screening make-ups tomorrow if you were absent  HW: Read a LOC essay of your choice. Bring to class a piece of paper that identifies the author, title, purpose, audience, exigence, at least THREE(3) rhetorical strategies employed and the critical issue explored-- due Friday

3 Wednesday 9-23-15  Work on “Plymouth Plantation” rhetorical analysis essay packet—due tomorrow  Return and discuss Summer Reading exams

4 The Rhetorical Analysis Essay  2nd prompt on the AP Exam  You will be asked how the author achieves his purpose through rhetorical devices and strategies  Nonfiction passage (hence “rhetorical devices and strategies) often pre 20 th century  Rhetorical Analysis Essay Prompt: How does William Bradford’s style of writing convey the Pilgrims’ attitude toward God and nature?  Now I am going to walk you through how to get there.  See the packet and begin working on it.  We will finish tomorrow in class.

5 Summer Reading Exams  61 students total took the exam  There was a 4 question curve plus one mistake on my answer key=5 questions were thrown out  84 Overall class average; morning classes were lower than afternoon classes  5 students made 100  2 made a 97  3 made a 91  Many made an 89  7 students made below a 70  LOOK over your answer key closely!

6 Thursday 9.24.15  Due: “Of Plymouth Plantation  Share your intro paragraph with a partner  Try to make one specific suggestions for improvement  Turn in to tray  Puritan Literature Notes—read these on your own; you are responsible for the information and will see it on an exam in the future  The Salem Witch Trials Video  Monday we will begin reading The Crucible, a fictional play based on the real- life events of the Salem Witch Trials. This video provides lots of interesting background details  HW: Read a LOC essay of your choice. Bring to class a piece of paper that identifies the author, title, purpose, audience, exigence, at least THREE(3) rhetorical strategies employed and the critical issue explored--due Friday

7 Friday 9.25.15 AP/GT Eng Language  Post your LOC Essay Description on turnitin.com discussion board  Assignment: Critical Issues Outside Reading Project—select topic by Friday
