1 111 Hunwick Primary School Village school in Rural area of County Durham 170 pupils 6 classes AIM: To use digital video to improve children’s capacity to evaluate their Literacy. Theme of lessons: Looking at ways to persuade an audience Previously we had read and written persuasive letters, produced persuasive leaflets and watched television adverts.

2 222 Task: to write, film and edit a persuasive advert Results: The first group – no problems The second group – found it difficult Changes made to planning. Children identified persuasive themes. When watching second one - didn’t understand it. Suggested improvements. The advert was so different and much more persuasive.

3 333 MAIN FINDINGS Focus Motivation Enjoyment Concentration Audience More critical discussion about specific genre Instant feedback.

4 444 Changes to teaching and learning : Reflection improves teaching and learning opportunities Consider more creativity in tasks Speaking and listening opportunities increased Work produced is more genre specific Children evaluate their own work more critically Give children an audience for their work. Use video as a resource instead of a text

6 666 IMPACT ON CHILDREN More effective use of ICT for individual children – individual approaches Children become leaders of learning and learn to evaluate their own work More discussion with teachers on their own learning and reflection on the best ways for them to learn Continuous improvement to teaching and learning- A better education! A better deal!

7 777 IMPACT ON TEACHERS Makes teachers reflect and consider the impact of changing practices Allows for Professional dialogue with other teachers- more reflective; improved conversations; SHARING experiences Raises self esteem and gives them a sense of achievement Recognition by outside agencies-spreading the word! Good and bad! Beginning to build reflection and inquiry into everyday thinking
