2 The Vision School and City are committed to working together cooperatively to foster 21st Century Learning Skills to improve student outcomes, to support our local economy, and to ensure the City grows as a local and global center of innovation Chief Sanchez visits Pasadena High School Law & Public Service Pathway

3 Year 1 Highlights: 13 Community Facilitators trained to conduct Result Team process Review and sharing of data across agencies – Early Development Instrument (EDI) administered to PUSD Kindergarten students last year with UCLA/First 5 LA – Secured funding to administer 40 Developmental Assets survey at 8 th grade this year in partnership with the Pasadena YMCA City of Pasadena Parks & Recreation

4 Year 1 Highlights (cont’d): Increased collaboration and coordination between PUSD and City staff: – Communications team joint response and outreach – After school programs – College & Career Pathways – Health & Nutrition – Joint professional development – Strengthened grant opportunities – Events & more Curbside Coffee Chat at Wilson Middle School

5 A few of the challenges faced this year: Capacity to inventory resources to effectively identify duplication and gaps needed greater focus, buy-in and support across multiple agencies Representation of some key stakeholders and coalitions missing from Result Teams Engaging existing coalitions and community groups More opportunities to engage key decision-makers on an ongoing basis needed

6 Result Team Recommendations: Comprehensive Community-wide inventory of services and resources A need for a systematic approach to data sharing and communicating System-wide focus on service delivery to better understand gaps and reduce duplications in services Governance structure that oversees systematic change so that resources are used to eliminate root causes of problems; and promotes institutionalization of promising practices Trash 4 Teaching project at Washington Accelerated Elementary School

8 Timeframe and Steps to Develop Governance Structure Work with USC Public Policy Capstone to engage external best practice scan of other cities that have encountered similar governance situations and have promising models 2 members from Board and Council to serve on Ad Hoc Governance Committee Engage the City of Sierra Madre and Town of Altadena 6-month timeframe YMCA Youth & Government Program

9 Year 2 Work Plan Four Result Areas Original seven results areas consolidated into four areas of focus A. Children’s early development needs are met B. Students are actively learning in school and community D. We live in safe, economically stable and supportive environments C. Students and families are physically, mentally, and socially, healthy

10 Continue to draw from Community Schools framework Greater focus on using parent and student feedback to improve quality and level of service Flintridge Center staff will facilitate the Coordinating Council and Result Work Teams City and School staff will provide greater support Continued collaboration with Pasadena Educational Foundation Year 2 Work Plan Working Groups, Strategies and Indicators City of Pasadena After School Adventures

11 Next Step for Result Work Teams… Consolidate Teams into four groups Engage coalitions and recruit members Continued research, data collection and dissemination Teacher Miguel Almena with 3D Printer provided by Pasadena Educational Foundation Determine level of staffing to support the governance structure (duties, functions, needed skillsets) and work effort Continue to align all levels of School/City staff Flintridge Center’s SKILLz Program Looking to the future…

13 School/City/Community Work Plan Student & Families Succeeding ● College and Career Ready It is recommended that the Board of Education and City Council: Receive the 2013-14 School/City/Community Work Plan Progress report Approve, in concept, the proposed Governance structure Appoint two members from the Board and Council to serve on the School/City/Community Work Plan Ad Hoc with appointments to be made by March 30 Approve the 2014-15 School/City/Community Work Plan
