Mobile Security By Jenish Jariwala

What is Mobile Security?  Mobile Security is the protection of smartphones, tablets, laptops and other portable computing devices, and the networks they connect to, from threats and vulnerabilities associated with wireless computing.  Mobile Security is also known as wireless security.  Securing mobile devices has become increasingly important, because in recent years the number of devices in operation have expanded dramatically.  Due to IT consumerization in the corporate world, where more and more employee-owned devices are connecting to corporate network.

What is Mobile Security?  Mobile devices such as smartphones collect and compile a high amount of sensitive information such as bank account information, where security is in a big dilemma, where access to this valuable information must be controlled to protect the privacy of an individual or a big corporate.  Also according to ABI Research, Mobile Security Services market totaled around $2 billion by the end of 2013.

Mobile Security Concerns

 Let’s talk about the top 5 Mobile Security concerns from the research done in last 2 years. #1) According to Techtarget.com, device loss is the top concern. For example, if you lose your iPad or your valuable smartphone somewhere, your sensitive information can be put at risk. #2) Application security is one of the top mobile security concern. As you all know, application security is the use of software, hardware and other such methods to protect applications on our mobile devices from external threats. > Trojan-infected applications are designed to look like they perform normally, but these apps secretly upload sensitive data to a remote server.

Mobile Security Concerns #3) Device data leakage is the third ranking mobile security issue. By putting sensitive data or corporate data on our devices has drawn the cybercriminals, who can target both the device and the back-end systems they hack into with mobile malware. So avoid and limit yourself from putting sensitive data on your cellphone, especially corporate data. #4) Malware attacks are very common on mobile devices. According to a Finland-based antivirus vendor named F- Secure Corporation, majority of mobile malware to be expensive SMS Trojans, which charges device owners premium text messages. And Android devices are the most vulnerable to these attacks.

Mobile Security Concerns #5) Device theft is also the most common mobile security concern. There have been crimes that is called iCrime also known as Apple picking, where the thefts steals apple devices such as iPhones, iPods and iPads. This crime includes illegal acts related with the thefts, such as assault and murder. If our device falls into the hands of a tech-savvy thief, then our sensitive data might be at a risk.

Protection of Mobile Devices against Intruders Now that we know the main concerns related to Mobile Security. Let me ask you all…. How can you protect your Mobile Devices against intruders? Would you pay extra to your cellphone providers to protect your phone?

Protection of Mobile Devices against Intruders  The treats can be prevented by various measures such as installing anti- virus software and etc., are not the same, because they depend on the case.  Store only what you absolutely need, because absent information cannot be compromised.  Protect data passing over public wired or wireless networks. The best way to prevent directed packet snooping on public networks is packet encryption.  Configure devices to block external snooping. Configure firewall around the perimeter of a mobile device to establish a security perimeter. Firewalls will provide minimal protection against intruder compromise of your mobile system.

Protection of Mobile Devices against Intruders  Encrypt sensitive information on the device. Even though this is a common message for many, but according to laptop theft reports it makes it clear that many users and even organizations haven’t got the message yet.  Backup critical information. All the critical information should be copied to an alternate location, where these information is on our own device or company’s device. Backup critical information to a secure storage area, such as an external hard drive or even DropBox is a very good internal storage for many users like myself.  The little things that we do matter phrase is correct, because we forget little things on our mobile devices such as patching and shutting down all unneeded services.

BLACKPHONE  Smartphone companies such as GeeksPhone, Silent Circle and PGP has collebrated together and developed the most secured smartphone ever called BLACKPHONE.  Let’s check out this very intriguiting secured smartphone….  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCzyD1QOeJY

Conclusion  It should not take warnings about Chinese hackers to push users and organizations toward secure mobile computing.  Cybercriminals come in all shapes, size, and from all ethnic backgrounds.  So, Securing systems is not about preventing what some see as the great cyber-threat in the East, but it’s simply the right thing to do.
