2 Primary Source Document First hand accounts of an event, life, or moment in time in their original form usually without explanation or interpretation EX: diaries, letters, photos, newspaper articles, the U.S. Constitution

3 Revolution An overthrow of a government in favor of a new system; a rebellion

4 Loyalists Those that supported England during the Revolutionary War Tories, Redcoats, Lobsterbacks Led by King George from England

5 Rebel Those who wanted to separate America from England Patriots, Sons of Liberty, Continental Army Led by General George Washington

6 Indentured Servant People that sold their services to someone who had the money to ship them to America They had to work without payment for a certain number of years until they had repaid the cost of their passage and were freed to work for themselves

7 Insolence Rude and disrespectful behavior

8 Treason The crime of betraying one’s country; working against one’s own country

9 Common Sense by Thomas Paine Pamphlet written in 1775-76 which inspired the 13 Colonies to declare & fight for their independence from Great Britain Presented in clear, simple language the need for and advantages of freedom from Great Britain

10 River Jordan In the Bible, the Hebrew slaves escaped from slavery in Egypt & crossed Jordan River into the Promised Land (where God led them so they could live in freedom & peace) Often symbolizes freedom
