2 What is depression? a condition of general emotional dejection and withdrawal; sadness greater and more prolonged than that warranted by any objective reason. sadness; gloom; dejection

3 Effects of Depression Mood swings Low self-esteem, feelings of worthlessness Irritability, agitation, anxiousness Insomnia/hypersomnia Lack of interest or pleasure Self harm

4 Types of Depression Major Depressive Disorder  Symptoms nearly every day for at least 2 weeks Dysthymic Disorder  Milder depression lasting for at least one year Seasonal Affective Disorder  Triggered by the change of seasons

5 Depression At Home Low mood, including tearfulness Little to no interest in activities previously enjoyed Difficulty sleeping – insomnia Poor appetite Fatigue, irritability Suicide risk, self-harm behaviors, preoccupation with death Thoughts of hurting oneself/others Irrationality Experimentation w/ alcohol or drugs
