2 Monitoring Student Behavior TTTTwo categories of behavior that are especially important to monitor: –I–I–I–Involvement in learning activities –C–C–C–Compliance with rules and behaviors

3 Involvement in Learning Activities  Assure Classroom Visibility –See all faces –Scan the room frequently  Demonstrate withitness

4 Compliance w/ Rules and Behaviors  Teach and Re-teach as needed  Arrange for Easy Accessibility & Visibility –Scan the room  Peer Coaching and Tutoring  Monitoring Group Work –Checking individual assignments

5 Consistency Definition  Maintaining the same expectations for appropriate behavior at all times and for all students

6 Sources of Inconsistencies  Unreasonable expectations  Lack of withitness  Lack of commitment to the rule or procedure

7 Management of Inappropriate Behavior MMMMake Eye Contact RRRRemind the student of the correct procedure RRRRedirect AAAAsk (or tell) the student(s) to stop

12 Caution!  Don’t erode intrinsic motivation.  Support sustaining the activity or behavior.  Know what implicit message you are sending.

13  Counteract potentially negative effects on intrinsic motivation –Choose materials/activities with high potential for sustaining interest –Model and demonstrate personal interest and enthusiasm
