2. How do we know? Stone reliefs and surviving remains give a brief overview of Ancient Greek approaches to health. There are references to the gods, especially Asclepius, the god of medicine and healing, and to the wide range of other 'options' from bonesetters to herbal remedies. Patients tried everything and anything, and the gods were only called upon to heal in the worst cases.

3. How did Asclepius Heal? The most famous temple of Asclepius was at Epidaurus.Epidaurus In honour of Asclepius, a particular type of non- venomous snake was often used in healing rituals, and these snakes— slithered around freely on the floor in dormitories where the sick and injured slept. These snakes were introduced at the founding of each new temple of Asclepius throughout the classical world.

4. More Healing………………. From about 300 BC onwards, the cult of Asclepius grew very popular and pilgrims flocked to his healing temples (Asclepieia) to be cured of their ills.Asclepieia Ritual purification would be followed by offerings or sacrifices to the god, and the patient would then spend the night in the holiest part of the sanctuary – (the abaton). Any dreams or visions would be reported to a priest who would prescribe the appropriate therapy by a process of interpretation. Some healing temples also used sacred dogs to lick the wounds of sick patients.
