Unit: Chemistry Lesson 3: Measuring Matter Essential Questions: 1.) Describe the units used to measure mass and volume 2.) Explain how to determine the density of a material

Think About It… Which weighs more, a pound of feathers or a pound of sand?

Think About It… Both weight the same- one pound!

 A scale measures weight  Weight is the measure of the force of gravity on an object

 A balance measures mass  The SI unit is kilograms  Mass is the amount of matter in an object

 Volume is the amount of space an object takes up  The SI unit is the cubic meter  Calculating Volume for rectangular solids: Length x Width x Height *Find the volume of the cube

 Calculating Volume for Irregular Solids: 1.) Fill the cylinder with a liquid. What is the volume? 2.) Slide the object in. What is the new volume? 3.) Find the difference: Volume with the object- Volume without the object *Find the volume of the marble

Think About It… Which takes up more space, a pound of feathers or a pound of sand?

Think About It… A kilogram of sand takes up less space than a kilogram of feathers! They have different volumes and densities!

Density Column Vegetable Oil Water Dish soap Corn syrup Honey

Density is the amount of mass in a given volume The SI unit is g/cm 3  Objects with the same mass but different volumes will have different densities.  Objects with different masses but the same volumes with have different densities.
