PRESENTATION OVERVIEW ◦Drones and Film ◦Drones and consumers ◦Other uses ◦The future of drone systems

What is an unmanned aerial vehicle? An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), commonly known as a drone and referred to as a Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), is an aircraft without a human pilot aboard.

“ It’s an entirely new vernacular in the language of filmmaking. All of a sudden we can do shots that we couldn’t do before. - Michael Chambliss, business representative for the International Cinematographers Guild

Drones & Film Filmmakers contend that drones create more distinctive shots because they can go where manned aircraft can’t – dropping down into narrow spaces such as alleyways and canyons and even flying through doors and windows.

Drones flying over volcanoes in Iceland.

Drones & Film Using drones in movies is changing the way that films are made. They are a safer, cheaper, faster, and more adaptable solution than traditional methods for capturing the perfect aerial shot. The simplicity of a drone makes it an ideal solution for most filmmakers. Drone controls are similar to those of a remote control car.

UAVs are becoming popular tools for directors and cinematographers. Drones & Film The city and county of Los Angeles have issued nearly 60 permits for drones on film and TV sets in the last year. Less than 10% of all productions use them, but demand is growing rapidly to allow nimble filmmaking and save money. A camera drone and crew cost as little as $5,000 a day vs $25,000 a day for a helicopter.

The FAA has authorized more than 200 companies and individuals to operate drones for film production. Among them was Aerial MOB. The company builds drones and rents for $5,000 to $14,000 a day, depending on the camera. One of its first high-profile customers was Warner Bros., which hired Aerial MOB to film a scene for an episode of “The Mentalist.” Since then, business has boomed for Aerial MOB expected to exceed $1.2 million this year. https://vimeo.com/108304571 Drones & Film
