MISSION STATEMENT The mission of Martha Ellen Stilwell School of the Arts is to develop 21st century thinkers to become global leaders by providing the highest quality of education in and through the arts.

SCHOOL OVERVIEW Martha Ellen Stilwell School of the Arts (SSOA) is the newest constructed high school in Clayton County. Located in Jonesboro, Georgia, a suburb of metropolitan Atlanta, the school sits adjacent to the Clayton County Performing Arts Center. Martha Ellen Stilwell was an influential pioneer for the arts. She was an educator in the Clayton County School System and was the first Fine Arts Coordinator for the school district. She originated the now-internationally renowned Spivey Hall Children’s Choir. The work of Martha Ellen Stilwell continues to promote excellence in academic growth and social development. SSOA opened its doors in August 2014 to educate students in the Clayton County Public School System. Built to meet the needs of a rapidly growing fine arts community, this state-of-the art facility is home to grades 9-12 students with an enrollment of approximately A highly qualified faculty and staff has been assembled to serve the school community. The parents, students and staff of SSOA seek to build a world-class school that is internationally competitive in academics and the arts. The students, staff and school community will have a school facility that will prepare them for the demands of the 21st century and beyond.

FINE ARTS PROGRAM SSOA operates on an alternate A/B Block schedule with a focus on the Fine Arts. Our curriculum provides all students with a challenging learning opportunity that will ensure they are prepared for an ever changing global society. Additionally our courses are geared towards a rigorous “college prep” curriculum supported by engaging, relevant and rigorous instruction.

SSOA Fine Arts Courses are: Music: Choral Ensembles, Band Ensembles, Orchestra Ensembles, Music Technology, Music Appreciation, Music Theory, A.P. Music Theory, Jazz Band, Guitar, Piano. Dance: Ballet, Modern Dance, Jazz Dance, Dance Production, Choreography, Dance History. Theater: Acting, Musical Theater, Theater Techniques, Theater Production. Visual Art: Drawing and Painting, Sculpture, Pottery, Computer Design, Graphic Design, Select Studio, A.P. Studio Art.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS All students will be required to complete a total of 23 units for graduation. All students will take:  4 units of English 4 units of Science 4 units of Mathematics 3 units of Social Studies At least 3 units required from: Fine Arts and Foreign Language* At least 4 additional electives 1 Health/Physical education course * Students planning to enter or transfer into a University System of Georgia institution must take two units of the same foreign language.

DUAL ENROLLMENT Students attending Stilwell also have an opportunity to participate in Dual Enrollment. Dual Enrollment allows students to take academic courses both at a college location and at their high school. COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES Our graduates have received acceptance into various colleges and universities. Among the colleges that have accepted our students are The University of Georgia, New York University, St. John’s University, Savannah College of Art and Design, New York Institute of Technology, the Boston Conservatory, Howard University, and Morehouse College. SCHOLARSHIPS Last year’s graduates received over $2,900,000 in scholarship offers, including a Gates Millennium scholarship winner for the past three years.

GRADING INFORMATION/POLICIES AND PROCEDURES  GRADING SCALE  All teachers at Martha Ellen Stilwell School of the Arts will follow the grading system adopted by the Clayton County Board of Education.  Numerical/Letter Grade:  A=90‑100 B=80‑89 C=71‑79 D=70 F=69 and below  Students enrolled in Advanced Placement courses will receive an additional five numeric points to their final grade and one additional quality point.
