6 The Bremen Town Musicians Monday
Why do the children and bees work together? Let’s add “We reach a goal more easily” to our map How did the boys get the canoe moving? Let’s add “We combine our strengths” to our map Tomorrow we will read a play about a group of animals that work together to reach a goal.

7 Sing With Me We are going to listen to a song called “A Partnership with You” about working with others. Listen for the words partnership, solution, and survival.

8 partnership part – ner - ship means that two or more people have joined together and become partners. My best friend and I have a partnership. We are partners when we play our favorite game. Is a partnership like a dog and a cat barking and hissing at each other or like two squirrels gathering nuts together?

9 solution so – lu – tion means solving the problem.
I used subtraction to find the solution to the math problem. Mom’s solution to missing the bus was to drive to work. Some people leave litter in a park. What could be a solution to this problem?

10 survival sur – vi - val means “the act of remaining alive”.
Survival is difficult in a harsh place such as the desert. When the weather turns cold, survival for some birds means flying to another place. What things are necessary for a person’s survival?

11 Amazing Words at Work Look at the picture of the girl talking with the boy. How might the girl and boy be in a partnership? (use the word partnership in your answer) How would calling a friend help find a solution to a problem? Remember our weekly concept is “Working Together”. Listen while I read a story called “Three Little Mice”. When I read, I look for what happened. In the story, the three mice built a new home. I ask myself, Why did this happen? It is because the mice were afraid of the big, orange cat.

24 Text-Based Comprehension
When an author tells what happened and why it happened, the author is using cause and effect. Sometimes authors use clue words such as so and because to help readers figure out what happened and why. Let’s turn to page EI3 in your reading book. These pictures show an example of what happened and why it happened What happened to the child’s bike? (effect) Why did it happen? (cause) Do Reader’s and Writer’s Notebook, p.135 together Do Let’s Practice It! DVD 97 together Envision It! Animations – Interactive Path

What other words could we use in place of happy? Why do you think the author chose the word happy? What does miserable mean? Turn to your partner and say a sentence that tells what might make you feel miserable.

29 miserable mis – er – a – ble means very unhappy.
The boy was miserable about missing school. The girl feels miserable because she is sick. Show me how you would look if you were miserable. What could make you miserable?

30 Concept Map The three little mice in the story you listened to yesterday were afraid of the cat. How did they solve their problem and get the job done? Let’s add “We solve problems” to our map. 38 Text-Based Comprehension
A drama is a story written to be acted out. It has characters, setting, and plot. Most of the story is told through the characters’ dialogue, or conversation. Good readers look for the problem in a story. They then follow the sequence, or order, of events in a story from beginning to end to see how the problem is solved. Turn to page EI24 in you reading book. When I read a story, I look for the story structure. I look for the problem that the characters face and what happens in the beginning, middle, and end as I try to solve the problem.

39 Text-Based Comprehension
Before I read “The Bremen Town Musicians”, I will predict what might happen. Let’s read “The Bremen Town Musicians” beginning on page 284.

40 Text-Based Comprehension
How do you know that this selection is a drama? What prediction that you made using a key word on the first three pages of the story was confirmed? What do you think made it possible for the animals to survive? What is the main idea in this drama? Why do you think the author wrote this play? Was her purpose to entertain or to inform the reader?

41 Literary Text: Dialogue
The Bremen Town Musicians is a drama, or a play meant to be performed for an audience. In a play, the story is told mostly through the characters’ dialogue. Dialogue is conversation that is spoken by characters. Each character has a particular way of speaking. What do you think the donkey is like? What are his traits? How do you think he might sound as he speaks?

42 Literary Text: Dialogue

Print encyclopedias are usually sets of many books, called volumes. Each volume contains information about things that begin with a specific letter of the alphabet. Work with a partner to find simpler words or synonyms in this sentence: A ________ morning was _______ to find its way into Rat’s bedroom.

106 Media Literacy You view, read, or listen to various media every day. Media include television, newspapers, magazines, radio, and other means of communication. The purpose of media may be to inform, to persuade, or to entertain. When media amuses or interests us, it is entertainment.

107 Media Literacy Suppose I view a television performance of The Bremen Town Musicians. I identify the topic and purpose. The topic is working together because the story is about animals forming a partnership. One purpose must be entertainment because it would be amusing to hear the animals sing their song and interesting to see how the animals outsmart the robbers. This TV show is entertaining because it is amusing and tells an interesting story.

108 Media Literacy How would a video performance of The Bremen Town Musicians be different than a stage performance? What would be important in presenting the drama on the radio? What special sound effects might be used? What would make this drama entertaining for someone reading the words without any pictures?

109 Research and Inquiry: Synthesize
I first thought about my topic of “Birds” as meaning one kind helping several other kinds, because that’s what I saw – chickadees, juncos, wrens, and more. When I researched, I could not find other facts or examples exactly about that. But I did find out that some birds of the same kind work together to build nests. That helps answer my question, Are there different ways that birds work together? Now I think about my topic as meaning any birds, the same or different. I expect to learn more.
