Overview  Wikispaces – three types of websites  Basic steps / tools  Try it out yourself  Possible usage of wikis in education

Wikispaces can be used to create 3 types of websites Press SETTINGS Then go to GENERAL and choose the type of website you want Wiki Basic Website Classroom

Using websites in education Can be used to post and compile information in an organised way (one-way- communication)...and exchange and collaborate (two-way communication)...or use wiki websites like a blog for debate and discussion...can include text, images, links, audio, audio-visual material

Basic functionality of a Wikispaces wiki Log in & link to other wikis edit comment see history navigation to other pages in the wiki Tools for editor, e.g. new pages, inviting members

Wikispaces websites: basic steps / tools  Add pages ... which will automatically appear in the navigation bar; you can also adjust the navigation bar individually  Post content on pages  Create templates to base pages on  Add comments  Track (and undo) changes  Be notified of changes (via ‘dashboard’)  Control membership and rights  Change design

Try it out yourself Create your own ‘CLASSROOM’ (= website): https://www.wikispaces.com/ https://www.wikispaces.com/....or take a look at these: DUMMY WEBSITESUSED FOR TEACHING http://sandpit1.wikispaces.com/ http://sandpit2.wikispaces.com/ http://sandpit3.wikispaces.com/ http://sandpit4.wikispaces.com/ http://bbisinternships.wikispaces.com/ http://bbis-a2english2011.wikispaces.com/ http://misspeters-englishclass.wikispaces.com/ Many examples from educational practice – good ones and less so: https://educationalwikis.wikispaces.com/Examples+of+educational+wikis

Wikispaces websites in comparison to... ManageBac  teacher posts assignments, student submits work  teacher feedback  no collaboration  chronological list of assignments, no structured overview or presentation of units  deadlines & calendar  discussion & debate  typical structure: post, comment, comment, comment etc.  collaboration  not intended for published/ presented work  material saved in files, so structure may be lacking  one of the most popular website building tools for education  ease of use and attractive design Not sure about:  control over membership and changes  keeping material organised Wikispaces websites are.... similar to Weebly - emphasis on PRESENTED/PUBLISHED and ORGANISED collection of work

Possible uses of (Wikispaces) websites in education  Teacher can post materials  Students can collaborate, e.g. projects, presentations (also with other schools)  Students not only share but present / publish their work – ‘Web 2.0 skills’  Work can be collected and organised meaningfully over larger stretches of time  Revision tool  Motivating : ‘cool’ and public medium  Can be reused with subsequent student groups

Good luck making websites on Wikispaces!
