1 Act 1-Scene 6 Summary Duncan, Banquo, Malcolm, Donalbain, Lennox, Macduff, Ross, Angus and their assistants enter Macbeth’s castle where they are greeted by Lady Macbeth. Duncan and Banquo compliment the Macbeth’s on their castle, and thank them for their hospitality. Lady Macbeth, kindly welcomes the King and his nobleman into her castle, and shows dramatic irony by acting innocent, when in reality she is planning to kill Macbeth.

2 Hidden Meanings, Character Development and Historical Information Hidden Meanings: ◦ Dramatic Irony, because Lady Macbeth is acting personable and innocent, while plotting to kill their houseguest (King Duncan). Character Development: ◦ In this scene, King Duncan shows his attitude toward people in his kingdom that have faithfully served over the years, and how he appreciates their loyalty to the kingdom. ◦ Lady Macbeth demonstrates her ability to brown nose King Duncan. Historical Information: ◦ There is no relevant historical information for this scene.

3 Important Lines from Scene 6 Duncan, “This castle hath a pleasant…..senses.” ◦ Duncan is showing his flattery of the Macbeths in this line. Lady Macbeth, “All our service……..hermits.” ◦ Lady Macbeth is showing her ability to “suck up” to King Duncan and although she is about to kill him, she can still appear flattering.
