3 Introduction TA – Nicole Chmura – nicolech@buffalo.edu nicolech@buffalo.edu – 2nd year MBA student – Office Hours: Monday and Wednesday 2:00 – 3:00 PM – Office: Jacobs 287 Recitation: – Occurs weekly – Attendance is MANDATORY – Covers homework help – Covers project help – Provides group time – Has in-class exercises and a quiz – WE DO NOT COVER TEST MATERIAL

4 Each recitation is worth 3 points – MANDATORY Can only miss 1 class per semester (with no penalty) – Less than 5 minutes late Minus 1 point, receive 2 points for class – More than 5 minutes late Minus 2 points, receive 1 point for class – Attendance credit Factored in to the overall 10 point recitation grade Recitation Policies: Attendance

5 Recitation Policies: Homework There are five (5) homework assignments Homework has two parts: – Database: Guided and Applied Exercises – Questions: Guided Exercise Questions at end of each chapter Homework is due BEFORE recitation starts Must be submitted correctly!

6 Recitation Policies: Homework Submittal 1. Database file(s) Uploaded to E-Assign before recitation starts – Be sure to close database before uploading or locked database (.laccdb) will occur Saved to flash drive (just in case) if there are issues 2. Guided Exercise Questions Hardcopy - due at the beginning of recitation on the due date OR Email – due before recitation begins on the due date

7 Homework 1, 2, 4, 5 = Worth 10 points each Homework 3 = Worth 15 points All TAs follow the same rubric – Every effort made to make grading equal Grades will be posted approximately one week after submission Students have two weeks to ask for a re-grade Recitation Policies: Homework Grading

8 Where can I get: Homework Help Homework hints in recitation – Occurs the week before homework is due Homework help files/powerpoint – Posted on MGS 351 course website Office Hours Email TA (nicolech@buffalo.edu) Ask in class the week BEFORE homework is due F1 (Microsoft Access Help) When in doubt, GOOGLE it!

9 Recitation Policies: Email Email subject line must have: – MGS 351 Recitation # Include your name somewhere in the email Emails are expected to be professional

10 DO NOT CHEAT – Cheating constitutes as: Using other students’ database files Using old students’ files Having other people do your homework for you – If you submit an assignment & receive a 0: I will not approach you Approach me only if you believe there was a mistake If you get caught twice, we will pursue UB’s official policies for cheating Recitation Policies: Cheating

13 E-Assign Register & log on to E-assign.com – This is where you will get your homework files! – Also where you will submit individual homework To Register on E-Assign, you need: 1.Course code (found on Professor Murray’s syllabus) 2.Correct recitation section (see your UB schedule) 3.UBIT name 4.Credit/debit card for purchase of materials

14 E-Assign Homework Submission Upload only ONE file at a time Double check that your file was submitted correctly by going back and re-downloading the file you just submitted (ALWAYS DO THIS!) If you are getting a submission error, try to upload the file again later May submit same homework multiple times on E-Assign BUT: – Only the most recently uploaded and on-time file is graded

15 E-Assign New homework submission system, so give yourself time to submit. If technical difficulty arises, you will have time to fix it. Worst case scenario: 1. Notify me BEFORE LAB that you cannot submit your homework file on time 2. Send me a screen shot of the submission error on E-Assign you are having 3. Bring your database file to class with you on a flash drive

16 Important – Page Numbers The syllabus notes page numbers for assignments and homework These page numbers refer to the ACTUAL PRINTED number on the page of the e-book, NOT the page that your PDF reader says you are on

17 Homework 1 (10 points) Homework 1: Chapters 1 & 2 – Overview & Tables – Databases: StudentRoster.accdb & Employees.accdb Chapter 1 Guided Exercise Chapter 2 Guided and Applied Exercises – Chapter 2 Guided Exercise Questions Due: – Wednesday Recitations: February 11, 2015 – Friday Recitations: February 13, 2015

18 Homework 1 (10 points) Tips: – Takes at least an hour to complete Give yourself AT LEAST 2-3 hours to complete – Do all Guided AND Applied Exercises – Complete Guided Exercise BEFORE Applied Exercise – Try to do assignment in order of numbered steps If you get stuck, email me or come to office hours – Don’t forget to hand in the Guided Exercise questions Email or hardcopy
