WAVES An Introduction to Wave Motion Created by Joshua Toebbe NOHS 2015

Introduction to Waves We’ve spent a little time looking at vibrations and oscillations. So what is the main difference between an oscillation (which can be represented as a sine function), and a wave? Waves go somewhere… Created by Joshua Toebbe NOHS 2015

Introduction to Waves Waves propagate from one place to another place. (sometimes they just go on forever… but the move) The material they are moving through is called a medium. Created by Joshua Toebbe NOHS 2015

Introduction to Waves At the most basic level, waves are broken into two groups, based on their relationship to media. Mechanical Waves, require a medium to propagate through. Electromagnetic Waves, do not require a medium to propagate through. Created by Joshua Toebbe NOHS 2015

Introduction to Waves While most of the fundamental quantities remain the same as with oscillators (period, amplitude and frequency), there are a few new ones. Created by Joshua Toebbe NOHS 2015

Introduction to Waves Wavelength: The physical distance that a single cycle covers. Created by Joshua Toebbe NOHS 2015

Introduction to Waves Wave Speed: the velocity at which a wave propigates. Created by Joshua Toebbe NOHS 2015

Introduction to Waves Created by Joshua Toebbe NOHS 2015

Introduction to Waves Lets take a look at a simulation and try to find the relationship our selves. http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/wave-on-a-string Created by Joshua Toebbe NOHS 2015

Introduction to Waves Example #1 A Wave travels from one side of 3 meter long rope to the other in 5.63 seconds. Highest point on the wave was 1.37 meters above the ground, and the lowest point touched the ground. What is the waves frequency? Created by Joshua Toebbe NOHS 2015

Introduction to Waves Example #2 A frequency generator is set to 75 cycles per second and a wave length of 0.38 meters. How long will it take the wave to reach a microphone 5 meters away? Created by Joshua Toebbe NOHS 2015
