What fly ash can do for you How it helps the environment.

True definition of fly ash. Fly ash N. Fine particulate ash sent up by the combustion of a solid fuel, such as coal, and discharged as an airborne emission or recovered as a byproduct for various commercial uses.

Fly ash reused. Fly ash Is also used as an additive for. Stabilizing soil. Asphalt concrete. Roller compacted concrete. Bricks. Embankments And lots more

Facts about fly ash 1.Using fly ash can replace 50% or more of Portland cement. 2.Fly ash is a fine, powdery material that is produced by burning coal to produce electricity, primarily in pulverized coal combustion boilers 3.Fly ash is used as an additive in many different materials. 4.Adding fly ash to concrete can make it stronger.

Ancient Additives Concrete additives have been used since Roman and Egyptian times, when it was discovered that adding volcanic ash to the mix of concrete it allowed it to set underwater. Romans knew that adding horse hair to their concrete gave it a better chance to not crack when hardening. Romans created impressive structures by using volcano ash (with properties that were first discovered in Pozzuoli, Italy.

Benefits of fly ash By using fly ash as an additive it helps prevent it from going to the land fills. The use of fly ash helps shrink the environmental footprint by reducing the amount of Portland cement mixed. Nearly a ton of carbon dioxide is emitted to make a ton of Portland cement. Fly ash can be used to help replace some of the use of Portland cement.

This is fly ash after being processed.

Portland and similar cements react with water (hydrate) to create a gel that hardens by absorbing carbon dioxide. When hardens it binds with aggregates.(Stone or sand) when combined it creates concrete. When concrete cures it leaves behind hydrated lime, adding fly ash or pozzlon to it allows the lime to cure better as well as making the concrete less porous and stronger.

Is it good for the environment? You be the judge. Use any and all resources available and find out for your self about fly ash. In a one page paper please explain the prows and cons of the use of fly ass as additives in different materials.
