4 Why Do We Mine?

5 Types of Mining Strip Mining Open – Pit Mining Underground Mining

6 Task Using the assigned Mine Type: Describe how the mine works
Brainstorm a list of impacts caused by this type of mining

7 Problems with Mining Abandoned mines leave mounds of waste rock, tailings, and ugly scars on the landscape. Scarred land is unable to retain water or support trees and plants. Dust problems result. Chemicals in the tailings can leach into nearby lakes and rivers or seep into groundwater.

8 Water is used in processing of mineral ores
Water is used in processing of mineral ores. The waste water contains many chemicals that are hazardous to the environment. Water flows into nearby lakes and rivers causing pollution. Gases emitted by the smelter’s smokestack cause air pollution and contribute to acid rain. Acid rain damages forests and the home of birds and animals. It also affects water bodies that may kill animals and plants living in them.
