Scarred land is unable to retain water or support trees and plants. Dust problems result. Chemicals in the tailings can leach into nearby lakes and rivers or seep into groundwater.

Gases emitted by the smelter’s smokestack cause air pollution and contribute to acid rain. Acid rain damages forests and the home of birds and animals. It also affects water bodies that may kill animals and plants living in them.
