3 Matter is the material (atoms and molecules) that constructs things on the Earth and in the Universe. Matter

4 Albert Einstein suggested early in this century that energy and matter are related to each other at the atomic level. Einstein theorized that it should be possible to convert matter into energy.

5 From Einstein's theories, scientists were able to harness the energy of matter beginning in the 1940s through nuclear fission. 6 Energy and matter are also associated to each other at much larger scales of nature. For example, solar radiation provides the energy to create the matter that makes up organisms.

7 Nature of Energy Energy is all around you. You hear energy as sound, you see energy as light, you can feel energy in wind. Living organisms need energy for growth and movement.

8 You use energy when you hit a tennis ball, compress a spring, or lift a grocery bag. Energy is the ability to do work.

9 TYPES OF ENERGY Energy comes in a variety of forms. The simplest definition of the types of energy suggests that two forms exist: KINETIC ENERGY and POTENTIAL ENERGY.

10 Kinetic energy is the energy due to motion. A rock falling from a cliff, a bee in flight, wind blowing leaves of trees, and water following over a waterfall are all examples of kinetic energy

11 Potential energy is the energy stored by an object that can be potentially transformed into another form of energy. Chemical energy of the food we consume, and the gasoline that we putting in our cars are all examples of potential energy.

12 Mechanical Energy is the energy of motion that does the work like the wind turns a windmill. Chemical Energy is the chemical reaction causing changes; food and fuel both store chemical energy.

13 Thermal Energy Total energy of the particles in a substance or material. All objects give off thermal energy Ice cream melting gains thermal energy

14 Electrical Energy is when motion, light or heat is produced by an electrical current like the electric coils on your stove. Energy stored in the nucleus of an atom from fission or fusion Sun Stars Nuclear Power Plant

15 Electromagnetic Energy Energy that travels in waves Visible light UV Rays Microwaves

16 Heat Energy where motion or rise in temperature is caused by heat like a fire in your fireplace.
