Luminex Virtual Tape Storage System Brian Sullivan Director of Computer Operations Broward County Public Schools 1

Executive Summary Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) has two mainframes each with a unique operating environment and separate tape system: IBM z/OS using a IBM 3494 tape robot for processing and backup IBM z/VSE 2.7 running under z/VM using an IBM 3490 tape unit for processing and backup 2

Executive Summary (cont) Currently, we depend on physical tapes and tape drives for daily processing, backup and recovery. IBM has communicated that they have or will be eliminating the support for some of the components of the tape units. Additionally, we are at risk of system downtime, data security breaches (lost, misplaced, mislabeled tapes), future End Of Live (EOL/EOS) support changes, and hurricane/storm related outages. 3

Scope The Luminex MVT (mainframe virtual tape) solution will address the requirements of both operating environments with disk- based virtual tape processing. This solution eliminates dependence upon physical tape and tape drives for daily processing, backup and recovery. The Luminex MVT260e looks like and processes like the existing IBM tape drives with no needed changes to the existing environment. 4

Scope (cont) The mainframe system data saved to the Luminex MVT260e would then be replicated to a remote Luminex MVT160e located at a disaster recovery (DR) facility providing BCPS with an offsite copy of our mainframe data in our DR site within 24 hours (and most often within four hours) after completion of our processing and backups. 5

The project goals: Significantly reduced backup and recovery times No single point of failure for mainframe backup processing Improved auditing and reporting of production and disaster recovery processes 6

The project goals (cont): An integrated solution to Disaster Recovery: a.Requires no changes to mainframe environment b.Seamless transition from the existing tape based infrastructure to the new Luminex MVT260e c.Provide added DR testing and recovery capabilities d.Allows additional improvements to backup and recovery capabilities 7

The project benefits: Eliminating the support exposure created by IBM ending their support for the tape infrastructure Eliminate the annual cost for tape infrastructure maintenance, media, and off-site vaulting Significantly reduce the risk of system downtime, data security breaches Providing substantially better performance, resiliency, auditing, disaster recovery testing, and control of the recovery environment while enabling the future use of encryption and private or public cloud services 8

The project benefits (cont): Recovery at DR site is immediate – no waiting for physical tapes to arrive Enhanced data security with replication over secure IP network Improved operational expense savings No need to buy replacement tapes 9

Summary The Luminex MTS virtual tape solution will eliminate dependencies upon physical tape and tape drives for daily processing, backup and recovery. This solution will address the requirements of both operating environments with disk-based virtual tape processing. The mainframe system data saved would then be replicated to the disaster recovery facility creating an offsite copy of the data files. 19
